Reps. K.C. Tomlinson and Joe Hogan, along with Sen. Frank Farry, announced that their proposed legislation to combat street racing has been signed into law by Governor Josh Shapiro. House Bill 2266, now known as Act 103 of 2024, aims to address the growing issue of illegal street racing.
Tomlinson emphasized the importance of the legislation, stating, "This is a crucial piece of legislations. We are seeing more and more of these illegal street racing events in our area." She added that it marks her fourth crime-related legislative success.
Hogan expressed gratitude towards Tomlinson for the collaboration, noting that "Act 103 of 2024 will keep our streets and communities safer and is a bipartisan solution to a troubling crime."
Farry highlighted the dangers associated with street racing: "Illegal street racing has become an incredibly dangerous issue and needs to stop before more people or law enforcement officers are hurt or killed at these events." He pointed out that the new law holds event organizers accountable with penalties aimed at reducing such incidents.
Under Act 103 of 2024, penalties for street racing have been updated. The fine per violation has increased from $250 to $2,000, and repeat offenders face vehicle confiscation. Additionally, organizers could be charged with a third-degree felony if serious injuries or fatalities occur during a race.
