NORMANDY, FRANCE - Today, Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-1) marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France, as part of a bipartisan Congressional Delegation. Throughout the trip, the delegation will observe and commemorate the anniversary alongside veterans, active-duty service members, government and military officials, and foreign dignitaries.

During his visit, Rep. Fitzpatrick presented Mae Krier from Bucks County with the Rosie the Riveter Congressional Gold Medal. This recognition stems from Fitzpatrick's bipartisan bill, the Rosie the Riveter Congressional Gold Medal Act, which was signed into law in 2020 to honor over six million women who served during World War II. Mae Krier has been a prominent advocate for these women and played a crucial role in garnering support for the bill.

In a statement, Congressman Fitzpatrick remarked:

“Standing on the shores of Normandy on the 80th anniversary of D-Day is a profoundly stirring and emotional experience, steeped in the indomitable spirit, unparalleled bravery, and inspiring valor of the Greatest Generation. I am humbled to be here amongst the heroes who fought for our freedom and have the opportunity to thank them, honor them, hear their stories, and witness the outpouring of gratitude and appreciation for their service and sacrifice.

Among them is Mae Krier of Levittown. In a full circle moment surrounded by all her fellow heroes she supported, I was proud to have the opportunity to present my friend Mae with the Rosie the Riveter Congressional Gold Medal.

As we continue to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, may we unite in reflecting upon the legacy of those who stormed Normandy's beaches to rid the world of fascism and evil. We must recommit to defending their values and always be inspired by their courage.”

Fitzpatrick’s legislation honors American women who joined various sectors during World War II between 1940-1945 when women's workforce participation increased from 27% to nearly 37%. By war's end, almost one out of every four married women worked outside home settings such as factories or shipyards.

The Congressional Gold Medal is Congress' highest civilian award; only 185 recipients have received it so far. In April this year at Emancipation Hall in Washington DC., Speaker Mike Johnson along with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries attended another ceremony where similar medals were awarded under this act.
