On International Women’s Day, Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania is leading a bipartisan initiative to secure a prominent location on the National Mall for the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum. This effort follows his successful campaign in 2020 to establish the museum itself.

The new legislation, H.R. 1329, co-sponsored by Representatives Nicole Malliotakis, Judy Chu, Monica De La Cruz, Debbie Dingell, Mike Carey, and Emilia Sykes, seeks to authorize the transfer of land on the National Mall to the Smithsonian Institution for constructing the museum. The bill has garnered support from over 90 bipartisan cosponsors.

Key aspects of H.R. 1329 include securing a prime location on the National Mall for the museum and maintaining congressional oversight with biennial reporting to ensure transparency during construction and curation. Importantly, it does not require new federal spending as it focuses solely on land designation.

Congressman Fitzpatrick emphasized that "America’s story is incomplete without the women who built it," advocating for a space where future generations can learn from influential women who have shaped America.

Representative Nicole Malliotakis noted historical struggles women faced and stressed that recognizing women's contributions is vital: "While great progress has been made, it is important we recognize and preserve women's contributions to our nation's history."

Representative Monica De La Cruz highlighted the importance of honoring American women's stories: “By providing the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum with a dedicated space on the National Mall in Washington, DC, we are permanently honoring their stories and contributions.”

Representative Judy Chu stated that including women's achievements is essential for completing America's narrative: “The National Mall tells the story of our country, but that story is incomplete without...the prolific accomplishments of America’s women.”

In 2019, Fitzpatrick introduced legislation laying the groundwork for this national museum. His efforts culminated in law by 2020. With H.R. 1329 now in motion, he aims to provide a permanent home where visitors can appreciate women's significant contributions.
