In celebration of National Women’s History Month, Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick, John Garamendi, Jared Huffman, Kevin Mullin, Debbie Dingell, and Mark DeSaulnier have introduced bipartisan legislation to honor the millions of women who supported the Home Front during World War II. The lawmakers' efforts aim to recognize the sacrifices and contributions of the "Rosie the Riveters," who played a crucial role in the wartime efforts.
Congressman Fitzpatrick expressed his pride in leading the bills, stating, "The heroic efforts of women employed in factories to build planes, ships, and bombs during World War II were essential to the war effort." He also mentioned his constituent Mae Krier, an advocate for the Rosies, and their upcoming recognition with the Congressional Gold Medal at the U.S. Capitol.
Congressman Garamendi highlighted the importance of the Rosies from the Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond, emphasizing their contributions to producing vessels during the war. He commended their dedication and perseverance in the face of discrimination and harassment, noting their role in empowering women and inspiring future generations.
Congressman Huffman acknowledged the significant sacrifices and contributions made by the Rosies, praising them for redefining women's roles in the workforce and setting an example for women across the country. He emphasized the ongoing inspiration that the Rosies provide for current and future generations.
Congressman Mullin echoed the sentiment of gratitude towards the women who were essential to America's victory in World War II. He mentioned the award of the Congressional Gold Medal as a way to ensure the Rosies receive the recognition they deserve for their invaluable service to the country.
Congresswoman Dingell celebrated the Rosies as trailblazers who opened doors for women across the country. She expressed her honor in co-leading the legislation to preserve the legacy of the Rosies and ensure their contributions are always remembered and appreciated.
Congressman DeSaulnier emphasized the lasting impact of the Rosies on advancing the role of women in the workforce and their invaluable contributions to the nation. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue advocating for the recognition of the Rosies alongside his colleagues.
The legislation introduced includes the "National Rosie the Riveter Day Act" to establish a national day commemorating the women who contributed to the Home Front during World War II and the "Rosie the Riveter Commemorative Coin Act" to honor the legacy of these women through the creation of commemorative coins. Additionally, a letter was sent to the United States Postal Service Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee to encourage the issuance of a commemorative stamp or series of stamps honoring the legacy of all women who contributed to the Home Front during World War II.
The recognition of the Rosies comes at a time when their contributions are being commemorated and celebrated, with Congress set to award the Congressional Gold Medal to Rosie the Riveter on April 10, 2024. The legislation introduced by Representatives Fitzpatrick, Garamendi, Huffman, Mullin, Dingell, and DeSaulnier serves as a tribute to the bravery, service, and empowerment of the women who played a vital role in America's history.
