A new law aimed at improving communication between the Department of Health and nursing homes in Pennsylvania has been signed by Governor Josh Shapiro. The legislation, led by state Representatives Melissa Shusterman and Kristin Marcell, mandates annual meetings between the Department's nursing care field officers and staff from licensed nursing facilities. These meetings will focus on discussing survey results, patterns, trends, and best practices to enhance quality care across the state.
Representative Kristin Marcell expressed her support for the new law: “Through yesterday’s action, we are helping to support a more transparent, effective relationship that helps to protect the lives of our most vulnerable citizens.” She emphasized that fostering collaboration between the Department of Health and nursing homes prioritizes the well-being of over 60,000 Pennsylvania residents.
Tim Ward, director of Advocacy and Government Relations for the Pennsylvania Health Care Association, also commented on the legislation: “To promote quality health, we must promote community collaboration for the care of our most vulnerable loved ones and neighbors.” He credited Reps. Marcell and Shusterman for their leadership in making House Bill 1853 a law. Ward highlighted that this newly required collaboration will help forge better partnerships to enhance care outcomes.
With Act 75 of 2024 now in effect, Pennsylvania continues its commitment to improving nursing home care quality and ensuring senior residents' health and safety.
