Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, along with Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill and Congressman Dwight Evans, has introduced the Delaware River Basin Restoration Program Reauthorization Act of 2025. This bipartisan initiative aims to extend a key federal grant program supporting conservation efforts in the Delaware River Basin.
The Delaware River Basin is crucial for providing drinking water to over 15 million people and supporting a $22 billion economy across five states. Since its inception in 2016, the Delaware River Basin Restoration Program (DRBRP) has allocated $72.1 million in federal grants and leveraged an additional $100 million for nearly 250 conservation projects aimed at protecting water quality and restoring habitats.
Rep. Fitzpatrick emphasized the importance of the river as a natural resource, stating: “The Delaware River is one of our nation’s most invaluable natural resources—providing clean drinking water to millions, fueling a thriving outdoor economy, and supporting critical ecosystems." He added that every federal dollar invested leverages millions more, creating jobs and ensuring resilience for future generations.
Rep. Evans highlighted bipartisan support for the reauthorization: “I’m pleased that we have bipartisan support for the urgently needed reauthorization of the Delaware River Basin Restoration Program.” He noted that last year’s unanimous approval from the House Natural Resources Committee was encouraging.
Rep. Sherrill expressed her enthusiasm about introducing this legislation: “As Co-Chair of the Delaware River Watershed Caucus, I am excited to help introduce the bipartisan Delaware River Basin Restoration Program Reauthorization Act."
Key provisions include extending program authorization through 2032, expanding recognition of Maryland's contributions to the watershed, and prioritizing projects serving small or disadvantaged communities.
The Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed endorsed this bill due to its significance in safeguarding regional drinking water and wildlife habitats. Mark Zakutansky stated: "Passing [the act] will ensure that hunters, anglers, and outdoor recreationists enjoy cleaner water...building on progress since its enactment in 2016.”
This reauthorization supports over 600,000 jobs linked to economic stability and environmental sustainability within the basin. The bill had previously passed unanimously through committee review.
