Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cory Mills, and Raja Krishnamoorthi have introduced the Bipartisan Restoring Faith in Government Act. This legislation aims to prohibit members of Congress, their spouses, and dependents from owning or trading individual stocks. The goal is to restore public trust by eliminating conflicts of interest and promoting integrity in public service.
Rep. Fitzpatrick stated, “The American people deserve leaders who are accountable, transparent, and wholly committed to serving their communities and country—not their stock portfolios.” He emphasized that the legislation is about restoring democratic integrity and called for support from other members of Congress.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez remarked on the importance of not using sensitive information for personal gain: "It’s simple—when members have access to sensitive information, they should not be trading in the stock market on it."
Rep. Mills highlighted past instances where officials profited from insider trading practices: “Members of Congress should not trade stocks, plain and simple.”
Rep. Krishnamoorthi noted that stock trading by Congress members erodes public trust: “Stock trading by Members of Congress... fundamentally erodes public trust in government.”
Emma Lydon from P Street supported the bill as a necessary measure against corruption: "Every day, Members of Congress cast votes that shape the stock market."
Debra Perlin from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) expressed strong support for the bill's complete prohibition on Congressional stock ownership.
Despite previous efforts like the STOCK Act of 2012 to prevent insider trading in Congress, violations continue. Statistics show significant support among Americans for banning stock trading by Congress members and their families.
Fitzpatrick has a history of working towards government reform since entering Congress. His agenda includes constitutional amendments and bills addressing accountability and election integrity.
