U.S. Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick, Judy Chu, and Jimmy Panetta have introduced a bipartisan resolution to designate the week of November 11th as National School Psychology Week. This initiative aims to honor the crucial role school psychologists play in supporting students' academic and emotional well-being across the country.
Rep. Fitzpatrick emphasized the significant contributions of school psychologists, stating, “Our school psychologists are the unsung heroes of our schools, guiding our children through some of the most challenging and formative years of their lives.” He highlighted their role in building resilience and nurturing hope among students.
Dr. Julia Szarko, a school psychologist from Abington School District and 2021 National School Psychologist of the Year, expressed gratitude for this recognition. She noted Rep. Fitzpatrick's commitment to increasing access to mental health services in schools during what she described as a youth mental health crisis.
Rep. Chu acknowledged her experience teaching psychology at community colleges and stressed the importance of school psychologists in addressing mental health issues among children. “I'm proud to join Rep. Fitzpatrick and Rep. Panetta in formally recognizing these overworked, underpaid essential workers,” she said.
Rep. Panetta also voiced his support for honoring school psychologists who assist students with academic and emotional challenges: “I’m proud to co-lead this bipartisan resolution.”
The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), representing over 25,000 professionals nationwide, supports this resolution wholeheartedly. Dr. Peter Faustino, President of NASP, stated that they look forward to continuing collaboration with congressional leaders to address the shortage of school psychologists across the nation.
