Pennsylvania will continue its water assistance program this year, backed by the federal Low Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) funding, as announced by Senator Frank Farry. The initiative aims to support residents with limited income in maintaining access to essential water services.
"Access to clean water is fundamental to our communities," stated Farry. He expressed appreciation for local and private water service providers, along with state assistance professionals, for their role in supporting those in need. He urged individuals seeking guidance on applying for the program to contact his office.
The state is awaiting a final report from the federal government regarding total funding availability. This funding comes from states that did not fully use their initial allocation and is being redirected to higher-performing states like Pennsylvania.
Last year, Pennsylvania successfully utilized all available funds, processing over 129,000 applications and distributing around $43.2 million. These funds assisted families who had lost or were at risk of losing their home water service.
LIHWAP provided grants directly to water service providers for households meeting income requirements. In 2022, it supported households with overdue bills or terminated services. The Department of Human Services expects forthcoming information from the federal government about setting an updated timeline and process for the 2023 LIHWAP.
"I am currently working with Sen. Boscola (D-18) on legislation that would create a permanent LIHWAP program in Pennsylvania," added Farry. "This would ensure that the federal funding is allocated to the communities for which it is intended."
