State Representatives Kristin Marcell and Kathleen “K.C.” Tomlinson hosted a hearing with the House Republican Policy Committee to address rising crime in Philadelphia and its impact on surrounding communities. The focus was on understanding the causes of increased crime and exploring potential solutions.
Kristin Marcell emphasized the need for legislative action, stating, "As crime continues to rise in the Philadelphia area, it is becoming harder for our communities to feel safe... With a district attorney unwilling to act in Philadelphia, it has become clear it is up to us as legislators to find solutions to this crime increase."
Kathleen “K.C.” Tomlinson highlighted the direct effects on her community bordering Philadelphia. She remarked, "This increase in crime makes families feel less safe, small businesses feel unprotected and makes the job of our law enforcement harder."
Testimonies were given by various officials including Jennifer Schorn from Bucks County District Attorney's Office and Fred Harran, Bucks County Sheriff. Harran reported significant increases in major crimes such as robbery and auto thefts last year in Bucks County. He noted staffing challenges due to fewer law enforcement applicants.
Fred Harran stated, "You often hear the phrase 'crime knows no borders,' and this is so true in this situation." He described how criminals face different consequences when caught outside Philadelphia.
Jennifer Schorn addressed catalytic converter thefts and proposed elevating them from misdemeanors to felonies. She explained how these thefts drain resources needed for more severe crimes like homicides.
William McVey discussed issues with illegal firearms possession by felons. He argued for stronger penalties as a deterrent: "Without strong penalties, these felons are often released and go back to carrying and using illegal firearms."
Steven LeCompte shared concerns about mail theft which surged by 600% recently in Northampton Township. He advocated for harsher penalties reflecting its organized nature.
House Republican Policy Committee Chair Josh Kail criticized what he termed a "soft-on-crime stance" by Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner. Kail said their caucus supports law enforcement efforts fully: "We will exhaust all options legislatively so we can ensure they can do their jobs effectively."
In response, local GOP representatives introduced legislative packages aimed at addressing gun-related offenses among other crimes prevalent across counties affected by spillover criminal activities from Philadelphia.
