Rep. Kristin Marcell and the House Republican Policy Committee, led by Chairman Josh Kail, held a hearing to review the educational strategies of the Council Rock School District and the Middle Bucks Institute of Technology (MBIT). The session aimed to assess how these institutions maintain educational quality while being fiscally responsible.
The event, titled “Back to School,” took place at MBIT and included testimonies from several key figures: Michael Roosevelt from the Council Rock School Board; Dr. Andrew J. Sanko, superintendent of Council Rock School District; Dr. Mark Covelle, director of MBIT; Bob Hickey, president of MBIT Executive Council; Thomas McCullough, an MBIT graduate and local business owner; and Carla Zapotek, executive vice president of the Home Builders Association of Bucks and Montgomery Counties.
During the pandemic, schools in the Council Rock School District faced challenges such as learning loss. To address this, they implemented programs like “Nights for Knowledge” tutoring and introduced a tax rebate program for seniors. These initiatives aim to support students' progress and provide financial relief to taxpayers. "Council Rock School District is a stellar example of a district that practices what it preaches," said Marcell.
Marcell emphasized the importance of preparing students for future careers without incurring significant debt. She noted that MBIT offers valuable opportunities for students to begin family-sustaining careers while contributing positively to Pennsylvania's economy.
Enrollment at MBIT has reached record levels, indicating the benefits of collaboration between school districts and trade schools. Kail highlighted this point by stating, “Education is about creating a pipeline between schools and Pennsylvania industry.”
