Reps. K.C. Tomlinson and Joe Hogan, along with Sen. Frank Farry, have announced that their proposed legislation to address street racing has been signed into law by Governor Josh Shapiro. The legislation, known as House Bill 2266, is now officially Act 103 of 2024.
"This is a crucial piece of legislation," said Tomlinson. "We are seeing more and more of these illegal street racing events in our area." She added that this marks her fourth crime-related bill to become law, emphasizing the importance of community safety.
Hogan expressed gratitude for collaborating with Tomlinson on the issue. "Act 103 of 2024 will keep our streets and communities safer and is a bipartisan solution to a troubling crime," he stated.
Farry highlighted the dangers posed by illegal street racing. "Illegal street racing has become an incredibly dangerous issue and needs to stop before more people or law enforcement officers are hurt or killed at these events," he remarked. He noted that holding organizers accountable with penalties is essential for reducing incidents and ensuring community safety.
The new law increases fines for street racing violations from $250 to $2,000 per offense and allows for vehicle confiscation upon repeat offenses. Additionally, it introduces penalties for event organizers, including a third-degree felony charge if serious injuries or fatalities occur due to a race.
