Reps. K.C. Tomlinson and Joe Hogan, alongside Sen. Frank Farry, have announced the passage of legislation aimed at strengthening penalties for street racing. The bill, known as House Bill 2266, was passed by the Senate with a bipartisan vote of 48-1.
The proposed legislation seeks to update existing penalties for street racing by increasing fines from $250 to $2,000 per violation. Additionally, it includes provisions for confiscating the driver's vehicle on any second or subsequent violations.
House Bill 2266 also introduces new penalties for individuals who organize street races. Organizers could face a third-degree felony charge if anyone is seriously injured or killed during such events.
"I am thrilled to see this important legislation has been passed by the Senate and is now heading to the governor’s desk," stated Tomlinson. "This modernizes the existing law while also creating new punishments for those who set up these dangerous street racing events."
Hogan expressed gratitude towards Tomlinson's leadership on the issue: "This is another example of Bucks County working together to improve lives." He added that he hopes Governor Shapiro will act swiftly in signing the legislation.
Senator Farry remarked on his similar legislative efforts in addressing street racing: "I want to thank Reps. Tomlinson and Hogan for their efforts in getting House Bill 2266 passed so we can give our law enforcement the proper tools they need."
The bill now awaits action from Governor Shapiro.
