WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-1) joined Representatives Andrew R. Garbarino (NY-2), Tom Suozzi (NY-3), David Valadao (CA-22), Jen Kiggans (VA-2), Anthony D'Esposito (NY-4), Nick LaLota (NY-1), Jeff Van Drew (NJ-2), Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11), and Marc Molinaro (NY-19) to introduce legislation authorizing funding for the rehabilitation, modernization, and construction of facilities and infrastructure at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA).
The legislation aims to support the implementation of the Full Speed Ahead infrastructure plan created by The Maritime Security Infrastructure Council (MSIC). Funding would be authorized from FY24-FY34, starting with $54 million in the first year and $107,333,333 each subsequent year. The introduction coincides with National Maritime Day.
"For over eight decades, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy has been an indispensable pillar of our national security," said Rep. Fitzpatrick. "Unfortunately, the USMMA's outdated and deteriorating infrastructure has been neglected for far too long... I am proud to join Congressman Garbarino and my colleagues in our shared commitment."
Rep. Garbarino emphasized the academy's role in maritime security: "Maritime security is critical to our national security... With this legislation, we aim to upgrade and modernize the USMMA’s facilities."
Rep. Suozzi noted his pride in serving on the Board of Visitors: "After facing setbacks for years, the Merchant Marine Academy is now positioned for a major turnaround."
Rep. Valadao highlighted graduates' roles in military readiness: "We must ensure this historic Academy has the resources necessary... I’m proud to support the Full Speed Ahead Plan."
Rep. Malliotakis pointed out underinvestment issues: “I’m proud to cosponsor this bipartisan legislation.”
Rep. Molinaro stressed resource necessity: "It is paramount that they have the necessary resources they need to succeed."
