Rep. Brian K. Fitzpatrick released a statement on Apr. 7 regarding the reported temporary ceasefire agreement involving Iran, emphasizing the importance of diplomacy and caution in ongoing developments.

The issue is significant as it concerns both American lives and broader efforts toward peace in the region. Fitzpatrick said, “Diplomacy must always be the objective. The reported temporary ceasefire agreement is a constructive step toward that end, and we will continue to monitor developments closely. Any measure that protects American lives and creates space for serious peace negotiations is the right course, even as caution remains warranted.” He also highlighted concerns about Iran’s activities, stating, “Iran has been the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism for decades. There can be no ambiguity about the threat this regime poses or what is at stake: it must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon or the means to deliver one.”

Fitzpatrick drew a distinction between actions against regimes versus their populations: “We must be equally clear in drawing the distinction between a hostile regime and the people it oppresses. The United States does not destroy civilizations, nor do we threaten to do so. Regardless of intent, such statements are blatantly irresponsible.” He added that focus should remain on negotiations for sustained peace and protecting American troops.

Fitzpatrick has represented Pennsylvania’s 1st District in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Mike Fitzpatrick according to his biography. He was born in Philadelphia in 1973 and currently resides in Levittown as reported by Ballotpedia. Fitzpatrick graduated from La Salle University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1996 before earning his Juris Doctor from Pennsylvania State University’s Carlisle campus in 2001 according to Vote Smart.

In conclusion, Fitzpatrick stated that priority should be given to congressional oversight as events unfold: “Our focus must remain on serious negotiations to secure sustained peace, on protecting American troops in the region—our highest priority—and ensuring rigorous congressional oversight as the situation develops.”
