Senator Frank Farry, chair of the Senate Institutional Sustainability and Innovation Committee, conducted a public hearing addressing the challenges hospitals in Pennsylvania are facing. The focus was on closures, staffing shortages, and access to specialty care. The hearing took place at the state Capitol and included testimony from healthcare leaders and policy experts.
Farry emphasized the importance of reliable healthcare access for all Pennsylvanians, warning that without prompt action, communities might lose essential health services. He stated, “Today’s hearing emphasized that without swift and strategic action, communities could lose vital health services.”
Testimonies were provided by key figures such as Nicole Stallings from the Hospital and Health System Association of Pennsylvania (HAP), Dr. Mark Rubino of Allegheny Health Network, Steven M. Fontaine of Penn Highlands Healthcare, Katherine E. Levins from Temple University Health System, and Dr. Ed Sabanegh from Guthrie Clinic.
A significant issue highlighted was the financial strain on hospitals due to inflation, workforce demands, and reimbursement issues. Stallings remarked on this challenge: “My main message today is that the hospital community in Pennsylvania is in a very fragile state.”
Staff shortages were another major concern discussed during the hearing. Rubino addressed this issue by saying: “Sometimes our industry is accused of crying wolf on professional shortages…but we physically can’t accommodate the patients because we don’t have the staffing.”
The discussion also covered how hospital closures are leading to longer emergency response times and reduced access to care across various regions.
