Rep. Joe Hogan of Bucks County has announced plans to introduce two bills in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives aimed at improving public health and making wellness activities more affordable for residents.
The first bill proposes the creation of the Pennsylvania Physical Health Improvement Tax Credit (PA PHIT). If passed, this tax credit would allow every taxpayer in Pennsylvania to claim up to $1,000 to help cover expenses related to gym and health club memberships.
A second bill would establish a tax credit of up to $3,000 for qualifying youth sports expenses. These expenses could include equipment, travel costs, and team fees. The credit would be available for families with children participating in all levels of youth sports, from competitive travel teams to local club play.
“Both pieces of legislation will hit on two issues I care deeply about – affordability and the health of Pennsylvanians,” said Hogan. “Youth sports are a huge avenue for children to create friendships and stay healthy, while gym and health club memberships can be a similar avenue for adults. The costs of these items have exploded in recent years though and are turning people and families away. My proposed legislation would help alleviate those costs and make these items more affordable once again.”
Both proposals are currently awaiting assignment of bill numbers and committee referrals.
