Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick introduced a War Powers Resolution for Operation Epic Fury on Apr. 16, aiming to ensure compliance with the War Powers Act of 1973.
The resolution seeks to clarify and enforce the requirements of the War Powers Act, which governs how military hostilities abroad are authorized and overseen by Congress. This action comes as discussions continue about Congressional oversight in foreign military operations.
“The War Powers Act of 1973 is the law of the land. This consistent standard must be applied to all past, current, and future administrations when it comes to military hostilities abroad: 1) Congressional notification 48 hours prior to the commencement of hostilities; and 2) Congressional authorization and approval within 60 days of the commencement of hostilities. This is the law that has applied to past administrations, and it is the law that will apply to current and future administrations. This is the law and, until it is changed, it will be consistently applied and consistently enforced across all administrations and all conflicts,” Fitzpatrick said.
Fitzpatrick currently serves in Congress representing Pennsylvania’s 1st district after replacing Mike Fitzpatrick in 2017 according to Ballotpedia. He has represented this district since then according to his official website.
Born in Philadelphia in 1973, Fitzpatrick now lives in Levittown according to Congress.gov. He graduated from La Salle University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1996 before earning a Juris Doctor from Pennsylvania State University at Carlisle in 2001 according to Congress.gov.
The introduction of this resolution highlights ongoing efforts by some members of Congress to reinforce legislative checks on executive power regarding military engagements.
